An overview of Peter Venn’s experience
with light hovercraft

Peter Venn was the second person in Queensland ever to obtain an Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) Masters Certification of competency on the 31st of May 1977. This exercise took several weeks of study followed by 2.5 hours of exam conducted by Captain Robertson. This was further followed by a practical test carried out by several representatives from the Marine board of Queensland.

Expo Joy Rides - 1988

The following 30 years saw him develop, build and use a range of hovercraft primarily for use in improving and caring for the environment along many of Queensland and New South Wales lakes, dams, and rivers, including the Brisbane River from the pile light to the wall of the Wivenhoe dam, then upstream to the far upper reaches of the Somerset dam. This was at the request and expense of the Brisbane City council and other local authorities.

These duties of aquatic and terrestrial weed control took him as far out as Mount Isa and Lake Moondara, to Cairns in the north and Sydney in the south Peter recorded over 11,000 hours of hovercraft operation during this time. In 1986 he was asked by the Expo 88 Authority to conduct joy rides on the Brisbane River. He designed and had build four craft for this purpose, and was successful in giving rides to over 138,000 expo guests. This is a world record for hovercraft of this size and it still stands over 20 years later. This was carried out without accident or incident and absolutely no impact on the environment.

He travelled all over the world with ACV’s – from the upper reaches of the Mississippi river to remote islands in the archipelago’s of Sweden, and in the UK, France and Germany to name but a few. Almost all of his 30 years and now 14,000 hours of operation has been dedicated in some way to the protection and improvement of the environment, working closely with the QLD Lands Department, Brisbane City Council, Kakadu National Park and other authorities.

Peter is proud to be a foundation member of the Queensland Sporting Hovercraft Club, which has a high standard of conduct and operation, and he is also a current delegate for the club to the Australian Hovercraft Federation.
