THE EXPERIENCE
You can count on Hovercraft Environmental Services of Australia's (H.E.S.A.) experience and
dedication applied to every project we are contracted to undertake. No matter what your needs
may be, there's a passion in all that we do!
“I have been able to successfully reach and treat vast areas of weed-entrenched waterways and
land areas, in the process highlighting the brilliant articulation and diversity of the air cushion
vehicle”, explains director and pilot, Peter Venn.
Peter Venn, hovercraft veteran and founder of Hovercraft Environmental Services of Australia, was the second
person in Queensland ever to obtain an Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) Masters Certification of competency
on the 31st of May 1977. The Certificate demanded several weeks of study and practicle competency
tests, followed by 2.5 hours of exams conducted by marine ace, Captain Robertson. This was further
followed by a practical test carried out by several representatives from the Marine board of Queensland.
Needless to say, anyone possessing such a certificate is deemed suitable to carry out almost any
professional ACV project imaginable. Yet in addtion, the past 30 years has seen Peter develop, build
and pilot a range of hovercraft for use both commercially and for competition use. Besides developing
and running other businesses, Peter even found time to train others in his profession to gain the high
level of competency required to operate ACVs for competitive and commercial use.
THE DIVERSE PROJECTS
Many types of projects have been undertaken over the years, predominantly aquatic and terrestrial
weed control, which took Peter as far out as Mount Isa and Lake Moondara, to Cairns in the north and
Sydney in the south. He recorded over 11,000 hours of contracted hovercraft operation while
comissioned by local and state government authorities' environmental departments, including Brisbane
City Council.
These government environmental contracts have taken H.E.S.A's ACV's to many Queensland and New
South Wales lakes, dams, and rivers, including the Brisbane River from the pile light to the wall of the
Wivenhoe dam, then upstream to the far upper reaches of the Somerset dam.
EXPO 88
In 1986, H.E.S.A. (then Australian Light Hovercraft Services) was asked by the World Expo '88 Authority to
conduct joy rides on the Brisbane River. They designed and built four craft for this purpose, and were
successful in giving rides to over 138,000 exhillarated expo guests. This is a world record for hovercraft
of this size and it still stands 20 years later. The 6 month-long operation was conducted smoothly and
without accident or incident. And of course, being consistent with the fair dinkum H.S.A. history; not
even a single native organism was harmed in the process!
FLYING THE FLAG
Over the years, Peter travelled all over the world with ACV’s – from the upper reaches of the Mississippi
River to remote islands in the archipelago’s of Sweden, lent his experience to the highly active hovercraft
club of Great Britain and travelled France and Germany in the name of all things ACV.
Almost all of his 30 years and now 14,000 hours of operation, has been under contract for the QLD
Lands Department, Brisbane City Council, Kakadu National Park and other authorities who have
invested in Peter and the H.E.S.A. for the protection and improvement of the environment and its waterways.
Peter is proud to be a foundation member of the Queensland Sporting Hovercraft Club, which has a high
standard of conduct and operation, and he is also a delegate for the club to the Australian Hovercraft
Federation.

H.E.S.A. WILL MAKE IT EASY FOR YOU
Due to the unique design and versatility of Peter's ACVs, both QLD police and local volunteer rescue
organizations have sought his help to conduct search and rescue missions in the aftermath of
treacherous tropical storms. Thanks to his expert pilot skills and professionally constructed craft, Peter
has helped rescue many a thankful flood victim from potentially deadly situations.
In more recent years, fire ants have been causing a severe threat to native species of flora and fauna,
not mention the threat to humans alike. Peter has been able to assist the authorities and take his craft
into previously unapproachable areas of country to aid in the extermination process of this troublesome
pest. Just another classic example of how Hovercraft Environmental Services of Australia can make a massive difference
to your department – a problem to H.E.S.A, is a problem solved!
